Should You Learn to Sail?

To us, there’s nothing better than sailing. Something about spending time out on the water, harnessing the power of the wind, and using your own skills to ride the waves is an unbeatable feeling. That said, making the decision to learn to sail can be difficult. Where helming a speed boat or pontoon allows for engine-powered acceleration, sailboats rely on careful management of the sails in changing wind conditions. In other words, sailing can be complicated.

Today, we’re helping you answer an essential question: should you learn to sail?

Do You Have the Spirit of a Sailor?

Before you sign up for sailing classes, the first question you should ask yourself is this: do you have the spirit of a sailor?

You don’t need to be a peg-legged pirate to be a good fit for sailing, but you might know if you’re a good fit for sailing if you have any of the following qualities:

  • You have a sense of adventure
  • You love to be out on the water
  • You enjoy being unplugged
  • You like working with your hands

If any of the qualities above describe you, then sailing might be a great hobby for you.

How Sailing Classes Can Help

Though it might seem complicated at first, the world of sailing is filled with fellow enthusiasts who love the open water and helping each other out. Here at GT Sailing, we count ourselves as a focal point in the Michigan sailing community, which is why we offer a variety of classes to help you on the way to ASA certification, such as:

ASA 101. ASA 101 includes a shortened ASA registration, which you’ll need to rent a private charter in most places. In this course, we’ll teach you the essentials of sailing, so you can get your sea legs and get a feel for what sailing really looks like.

ASA 103. A 2-day course, 103 gives you a more well-rounded understanding of the sailboat. At the same time, you’ll also explore the fundamentals of more advanced skills like navigation, which you’ll need to truly explore the waves.
