The Risks of Winter Lake Michigan Sailing
While you may not be interested in being anywhere near Lake Michigan in the winter, there are still some brave adventurers who yearn for the waters. Here at GT Sailing, we’re staffed with experienced sailors who love to share the sailing experience with our customers, even when the weather gets a tad cold.
In this month’s blog, we’re diving into the risks associated with winter sailing on Lake Michigan, and why it’s best to wait until Spring.
Cold Weather Hazards You Can’t Ignore
Sailing on Lake Michigan during cold weather seasons can be a unique experience, but it comes with a heightened risk of several serious hazards.
- Falling overboard: In the summer, this could lead to a funny story to tell at dinner on the same day, but in the winter, falling off your sailboat is no joke and can be easily fatal. This is because falling into cold water can trigger a cold shock response that eventually leads to hypothermia. It’s important to remind yourself of the risk and reward before sailing out in wintertime, and that the chances of falling off a sailboat are low for an experienced sailor, but never zero.
- Ice hazards: A big concern for sailboats in winter would be shelf ice, which forms from freezing waves and spray and is unstable, potentially crumbling at any moment under your feet. Ice accumulation on the boat also makes surfaces slippery and hinders rigging adjustments.
- Reduced Visibility: Snow and fog can significantly reduce your visibility out on the water, and the short winter days also give you less daylight to work with.
- Vessel and equipment issues: Cold temperatures stiffen lines and rigging, so materials like fiberglass and wood become less flexible. Freezing spray can also add weight to the vessel, potentially causing instability.
- Crew safety: Finally, keep your crew or passengers in mind if you have any for a potential trip, because extreme cold can wear on the mind and body if exposed for long periods of time.
Sail Safely with GT Sailing
For the reasons above, that’s why we don’t offer winter sailing charters or courses here at GT Sailing. While it can be fun, beautiful, and something fresh, there’s too much risk and concerns with winter sailing.
However, once spring comes and those risks become obsolete, we’re ready to set sail and take you on all kinds of adventures on Lake Michigan. Contact us today for more information.
